Combining different ocelplates with different carbon contents, followed by welding, reloading and forging, gives us an inimitable damask pattern. Iron is generally soft and easily deformable, while carbon ocelis hard and elastic. Thus, metal layers with very high and very low carbon content were alternated. Soft iron layers prevent the metal from becoming too brittle, and high carbon layers give the necessary elasticity and sharpness.
