Cast Damascus is a technology that dates back to antiquity and the Middle Ages. He gets another names like wootz, bulat , real damask. As the name suggests, the center production used to be the Syrian city of Damascus. From there, technology spread to Mesopotamia, Persia and East Indies. It is a special ocelwhose structure is dendritic. The share of carbon in the structure is very high (around 1.5%), but alloying elements are practically absent, except for a small proportion of vanadium and molybdenum. The production consisted of melting pieces of iron in a special heat-resistant crucible so-called crucible. To increase the carbon content, dry twigs were added to the mixture, charcoal or other organic material. In order to form slag, which on each other bound unwanted elements (in the form of sulfur, phosphorus and oxygen), were also in the mixture crushed shells or other limestone-containing material are added. The crucible was after closed to prevent oxygen from entering the melt.
